Types of Compactors We Offer

At McClung-Logan we offer a prime selection of Volvo riding compactors and remote driven compactors including:

  • Asphalt compactors.
  • Soil compactors.
  • Trench compactors.

All of our compactors offer extensive benefits to our customers. Let’s find the right one for you!

Asphalt Compactors

Asphalt compactors are designed to compact asphalt surfaces, sometimes described as bituminous work. The compactors help ensure a smooth road surface that resists damage from vehicles and infiltration by water.

Asphalt compactors typically use either a smooth drum or special tires to achieve optimum compaction. Smooth drum asphalt compactors typically utilize vibration to improve compaction. They range in weight from just over 1.5 tons to just over 15 tons.

Soil Compactors

Soil compactors are designed to compact dirt surfaces, sometimes described as earthwork. Compaction eliminates air spaces in the soil to increase its density. This offers many benefits in construction, including:

  • Increasing the strength of soil.
  • Reducing settlement of construction.
  • Reducing water infiltration.
  • Increasing homogeneity of soil to make it perform more predictably.
  • Reducing frost swelling.
  • Providing a more gradable substrate for roads.
  • Reducing deformation under traffic loads.
  • Reducing the need for structural maintenance.

Some soil compaction benefits from smooth drums while other drums use protrusions known as pads or sheepsfoot. The appropriate drum type depends on the soil being compacted, and the stage of compaction. The same compactor can use both types of drums, with the addition of a shell kit. Volvo shell kits allow for easy, fast transition between the smooth drum and padfoot setup. While asphalt compactors often use a twin roller design, soil compactors utilize a single-drum design with drive wheels behind.
